A Safe Living Environment Matters

A Safe Living Environment Matters
January 04, 2025

Many seniors struggle with challenges of physical or cognitive decline during the aging process. That's why it's important to assess the living space your loved one may require. Here is a check list to prepare for the possibilities of both physical and cognitive decline:

  1. Is everything in their living environment accessible on one floor? Ex: laundry room, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen
  2. Are the doorways and hallways wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair?
  3. Is the bathroom equipped with safe grab bars and proper shower chairs to allow for proper and safe bathing?
  4. Are there carpets on the floor that could cause tripping or any other fall risks in all living spaces?
  5. Is there a call system and a plan in place for easy access to emergency care?
  6. The kitchen- Is it safe to use the stove? Should there be a stove in the kitchen? Are there cooking tools in the home that should be removed? Ex: Knives, cooking oil, etc…

The Manor House assisted living suites at Wedgewood Estates are designed so that your loved one is in the safest environment possible, while allowing them to remain as independent as possible.

Our assisted living suites are 370 square feet of living space. This allows for personal amenities and comforts of home yet makes it easy to access everything they need without having to do a lot of moving. Every suite has 2 emergency pull chords, (One in the bathroom, one in the suite by the bed) which notifies our in-house care team of nurses and companions. 24 hours a day, residents have access to quality care and a responsible healthcare team that can assess a situation to either care for your loved one in-house or send them to the hospital for required emergency care.

All bathrooms are wheelchair accessible and have proper safely grab bars as well as an attached safety bench in the shower.

Every suite contains a kitchenette with plenty of cabinet space, a microwave and a small refrigerator. This space is designed to keep safety in mind.

The environment your loved one lives in matters. Physical and cognitive struggles they face on a daily basis can easily be transformed into a thriving lifestyle simply by changing their environment.
