Dick & Betty Swendal met at a dance in February of 1952 and married in October, only 8 months later. Betty went to the dance with a boy who didn't dance. She wanted to dance. Dick asked, so she said yes! They went on a date the very next night and have been together ever since. She had just turned 18 when they married. He was 23.
72 years and 4 months later they have 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild with another on the way. When asked what they attributed to a long marriage, Betty said, “We expected it to last a lifetime, and we've worked at it.” Dick agreed and simply said, “Our love.” She also said how important it is not to go to bed angry and always be willing to apologize.
Today we celebrate Dick and Betty and their 72nd Valentines Day together! May we all learn from their example.
